Edible wedding cake decorations are a great way to add creative
detail to your wedding. Wedding cakes can be adorned with
chocolates, fruit, or candy. One incredibly interesting garnish
however, is the flower.
Flowers are often used to add decoration to wedding cakes, but
usually removed before the cake is served. Instead of removing the
beauty of the cake, why not serve it. Using edible flowers for
wedding cake decorations is a wonderful way to keep the cake looking
great all the way to the guests’ plates.
Before using edible flowers, there are some ground rules you should
know. The most important rule is to use flowers that were grown
without pesticides. Most flowers grown without pesticides and
chemicals are labeled for eating. By following this rule, you will
ensure your edible decorations are not poisonous.
A good rule is to avoid getting the flowers from florists, garden
centers, or nurseries unless you are certain they contain no
pesticides. Most of the commercial flower dealers use chemical
products on their flowers. Growing them yourself is a great way to
be sure your flowers are chemical free.
Another tip you should know is that you are only supposed to eat the
flower’s petals, not its stem, pistil, or stamen. These other parts
are not likely to harm you, however they are not usually very tasty.
Eating flowers in large quantities however can upset your stomach.
So, it is best to indulge lightly, especially if you have never
eaten flowers before. Another thing to note is that people with
flower allergies might not want to participate in eating the
flowers, as they may have an allergic reaction.
Cooking with flowers can be traced back to Roman times and Victorian
era. Some Portuguese dishes still call for flowers as an ingredient
as well. Although there are many edible flowers, not all of them are
appropriate for a wedding cake. Some edible flowers taste bitter or
spicy. The best edible flowers for a wedding cake are those that
have a sweet taste to them.
Violets are one of the best flowers to try on a wedding cake. They
are sweet to taste and are extremely cute and decorative. Apple
blossoms are also nice to use. They tend to have a delicate floral
flavor.
Another commonly used wedding flower is the carnation. What most
brides don’t know is that the carnation is a great garnish with its
sweet taste and beautiful appearance.
Chamomile is a flower that has a sweet apple flavor. It is a great
way to add edible decor to a wedding cake. Honeysuckle, Lavender,
Mint, Pansies and Petunias are all also sweet flowers and coordinate
well with sweet treats.
So when you are planning your wedding cake, remember to impress your
guests with the addition of edible flowers. Edible wedding cake
decorations add spice and personality to your menu and give the
guests interesting conversation options as well.
