What You Should and Shouldn’t Wear to An Evening Wedding
Some of us dread trying to find an outfit to wear to a wedding. With a
zillion fashion rules it is hard to tell what’s appropriate or
inappropriate to wear these days. What to wear to an evening wedding is
especially tricky considering its possible formality. Using these
fashion rules you can be comfortable with your choice of clothing for an
evening wedding.

Formal or Casual
Knowing the formality of the wedding is key to choosing what you should
wear. Many times the bride will include whether the wedding is formal or
casual on the invitation. Black tie weddings almost always include the
appropriate dress on the invite. For a formal wedding, women should
choose to wear dark colored cocktail dresses or sharp suits. Men should
wear tuxedos or dark suits with ties.
If you are unable to determine whether the wedding is formal or casual,
it is suggested to choose clothing that will fall somewhere in the
middle of the two. Examples for women would include a navy, plum, or
black simple dress or pantsuit. Examples for men include dark suits with
a tie. The tie can always be removed if the ceremony turns out to be
more casual.
Colors
It is rarely acceptable for guests to wear pastel colors to an evening
wedding. Evening weddings are just not the time to wear the butter cream
flower dress you own. Dark colors look best in the evening. This does
not mean however you must wear black. Darker shades of green, blue,
purple, and red are lovely for evening wedding. Grey is a huge hit as
well.
Never wear white or cream to a wedding, no matter what time of day. We
see this horrible choice made often by guests and even mothers of the
couple. The idea behind this is to allow the bride to shine on her
special day. It is insulting to a bride for a guest to arrive in a color
very similar to her wedding dress.
Hats
Female guests who wish to wear hats can do so fashionably at an evening
wedding. Hats can be beautiful accessories to lovely eveningwear. Do
remember however to limit the size of the hat. Larger hats can be a
problem to other guests trying to view the ceremony from behind. Simple
hats work best for a wedding.
Pants
A few years ago no woman would ever be caught with pants on at a
wedding. Fashion is changing however and pants are no longer prohibited
wedding attire. Guests attending a casual evening wedding can wear pants
in many ways. Paired with a nice sweater or blouse, pants can be an
appropriate choice. For a more formal wedding, dark pants can be paired
with a cocktail sweater, silk blouse, or blazer for a fancier look.
Pantsuits are also a popular choice for evening weddings.
There are two good rules when choosing what to wear to an evening
wedding. First, it is best to dress in the middle when you are unsure of
the wedding’s formality. Secondly, remember it is the bride’s special
day and never out-dress her. Using these tips will help you successfully
choose what to wear to an evening wedding.
