World War II was the main focus in America during the 40s, the time a couple married 60 years would have married. Fashion and decor reflected the time of war.

Using decorations inspired by the 1940s, you can create timeless decor for your 60th wedding anniversary celebration. A 60th wedding anniversary decorative plan should be modest and simple, reflecting the time of the original wedding.

With the war occurring, there was very little room for fashion fabric waste. Silk and wool were extremely popular fabrics at this time, however the silk was needed to make parachutes for the troops, and the wool was needed to make blankets to warm them. Everything went to the war. Women were manning the factories and men were rushing off the join the military. Everyone was affected by the fighting taking place.

Style in the 1940s was simple and understated. Dresses usually buttoned down the front, had tee shirt style sleeves and fell just below the knee. Polka dots and big flower prints were very popular for this time. Men could often be found in military wear, or in zoot suits for more formal occasions.

Decor for an anniversary celebration of this theme should be done in muted colors. It should appear simple in form. A great idea to start the decorative style is to choose cotton tablecloths. 1940s inspired tablecloths might have red teapots or big and small flowers on them. The colors are usually in shades of red, pink, blue, and yellow. It is a very primary color scheme.

Placing short white vases of short-stemmed flowers in the center of each table is a great way to capture the simplicity of the 40s design. White strings of lights can be draped on the ceiling above each table to give it a special emphasis.

Hiring a swing band is a great idea for this celebration. The anniversary couple is sure to recognize some of the songs and will love dancing the night away. For extra appeal, hire a swing instructor to teach the guests a few fancy moves.

Food for a celebration of the theme should stay light and simple. Simple finger sandwiches and pasta salads are great. They can be set on a simple table and arranged buffet style. Iced tea is a great drink to serve. A small cake can be served with coffee or hot tea.
