Military Wedding Decor – Uniform Dress Code Will Choose Your Decor Colors
Military wedding decor is a classy and beautiful choice for your
wedding but there are a number of rules of respect that dictate
the correct way to dress so as not to offend the traditions of the
military. These rules are dictated by government issued manuals on
uniforms.
If your wife or husband is in the military, this will be a good
primer to help you choose your complementing wedding colors. If
you are enlisted and aren’t sure of the particulars, then this
will be a solid brush up on your military wedding decor knowledge.
At a military wedding, the flowers and bunting aren’t the only
decorations that come together on your big day to create the
patriotic atmosphere. You and/or your spouse to be will be in
military dress. So will every enlisted member of your wedding
party. For the most part, most of the attendants of your wedding
who are enlisted will be wearing their uniforms as well. It’s
important for you to know which uniform they will be wearing so
that you can plan your wedding colors accordingly.
The decision on which uniform should be worn to the wedding is
dictated by whether the wedding is formal or semi-formal, the time
of day the ceremony is performed, the season in which it occurs,
and any other criteria specified by the government uniform manual
appropriate to the branch of service for which you or your
spouse-to-be serve. For example, ‘Mess’ dress uniform is worn for
formal weddings. This may mean dark blue for most branches in the
winter, but in the summer, army and navy may wear white pants.
If the ceremony is semi-formal, Class As or Service dress should
be worn. These, too, are dark blue and sometimes worn with white
pants.
The bride and her bridesmaids may wear their uniforms if they
wish. It does not break any military codes for her to opt for the
traditional white gown or to ask her bridesmaids to wear a color
that complement the men’s uniforms instead. Should it happen that
some of the groomsmen or bridesmaids service in a different branch
of the service than the bride or groom, they wear their uniforms
that are of equal formality.
The groom and his best man do not wear gloves because this makes
for difficult ring handling, but all the other men wear white
gloves for the entire ceremony. Even if you choose white or gold
flowers to complement the uniforms, a military man should not wear
a boutonniere. Officers can only wear military decorations with
their uniforms.
The fathers and mothers of the bride or groom who are retired (or
active) military may also wear their uniforms. Many mothers choose
to wear civilian attire and this is fine, just as it is okay for
the bride and bridesmaids to wear what they wish without flouting
military code.
If you have a mix of military and non in your wedding party, you
will not be able to have all the men wear the same suit. Non
military should wear similar colors of matching formality to the
military wedding party members.
The guests who serve or are retired from military service may wear
uniforms or a traditional tuxedo or suit according to their
wishes. If you are having a black or white tie wedding, simply
include the statement ‘Mess dress uniform invited’ on your
invitations to best direct your guests on which uniform is
appropriate should they choose to dress in uniform. Similarly,
include the statement ‘Class A uniform invited’ or ‘Service dress
uniform invited’ for a semi-formal wedding.
