Homemade Wedding Invitations
Make Your Own Wedding Invitations
Have you exhausted all hope of finding that perfect wedding
invitation—a true representation of you and your spouse to-be?
Selecting the wedding invitation is one of the most exciting and
often challenging aspects of wedding planning.
If you you have not been able to find with in the sample card
books of professionals—it may be time to take matters into your
own hands.
Some invitation manufacturers actually sell kits that include all
the paper products and accessories that would be needed to create
one of their “homemade invitations”. This is one alternative to
buying out of a catalog. However, a prefab kit is limited in the
amount of creativity you can add, since instructions for a plan
are already included.
While professional wedding stationeries offer the reassurance of a
large staff and expensive printing facilities, your creativity and
imagination are just as if not more valuable.
Plan Ahead
Making your own wedding invitations will take time and patience,
so plan accordingly.
Make sure there’s ample time to complete the cards before the
eight weeks (2 months) in advance. This time frame allows for last
minute corrections and additions, as well as addressing envelopes
and postage.
Some basic supplies will be needed before getting started:
scissors, x-acto, hot glue gun, good quality cardstock, decorative
writing paper, envelopes and high quality calligraphy pen and ink
refill.
Good quality cardstock can be purchased from a stationery store.
Shop around to find your desired type. Be sure to inquire about
various sizes. The invite can be hand-cut to a certain shape ( ie.
Heart, Star, Circle, etc.). or specific size for multi-folding. Be
sure to find envelopes that will fit properly. Also, envelopes
don’t have to be the same exact color as the invite, going a shade
lighter or darker will be complimentary.
In addition to the heavier cardstock, a lighter weight decorative
paper will also be needed for the actual writing of the invite.
Handmade vs. Homemade
Do it yourself invitations, like the professional ones, can range
from simple to sophisticated.
Handmade invitations give an opportunity to truly build the card
from scratch. Don’t be afraid to incorporate the wedding theme
into the invitation.
Pressed miniature spring flowers or dried autumn leaves make a
lovely touch. Satin ribbons and glitter make elegant borders.
Small shells are tie in nicely for a beach wedding decoration.
Silver charms, colorful beads, silk flowers; Craft stores offer a
large variety of small wedding decorating accessories that will
make your invite unique!
If you’re the artistic type, a small drawing or original poem
might add that personalized touch you’re looking for.
Before adhering the decorative paper to cardstock, write the
invitation with fancy script or calligraphy. When the invite
wording is complete, use a hot glue gun to adhere paper to card.
Let dry overnight to be on the safe side.
All homemade wedding invitations aren’t necessarily handmade.
While handmade crafts do add a unique touch to every card;
however, depending on the number of guests and style you’re
looking to accomplish, you may want to look to your computer for
more options.
Computer programs are available for the specific task of designing
wedding invitations. If it’s a large guest list, this may be a
more practical alternative to handmade.
Also, computers offer a wide range of different fonts to choose
from. So if you’re not proficient in calligraphy, this is a great
way to get that same classic look with no finger cramps. Graphics
and colors can easily be selected and combined onto a virtual
palette to preview.
Computers have the technology that allows you to experiment with
every aspect of the wedding invitation, including wedding
invitation wording, just with a couple clicks of the mouse.
No matter which method used, handmade or simply homemade—making
your own wedding invitations is sure to impress guests.
