What To Wear To An Evening Wedding
How To Decide What To Wear To An Evening Wedding
It used to be that only the wedding party and the bride herself
worried about what to wear to a wedding. However, today, finding
the perfect wedding attire – as a guest – can be equally as
frustrating. And, since more couples are choosing to have their
weddings during the evening hours, there seems to be more of an
emphasis on what guests should wear (the concept of slipping on a
sun dress and sandals -- as you would during an afternoon
wedding -- no longer apply).

The good news is, no matter what you choose to wear, all eyes will
be focused on the bride and her groom for most of the night
anyways. But, if you're still nervous, there are a few guidelines
to keep in mind that will help you make sure you feel comfortable
in what you're wearing the entire night through! The following
article will provide some pointers on what to wear to an evening
wedding.
The first item that will help you decide what to wear to an
evening wedding is the invitation. Usually, if the couple getting
married has a request for attire, they will mention it on the
invitation. Some of the words you may see are: casual attire,
black tie optional, black tie, or cocktail attire. Most of these
terms are pretty straightforward.
Casual means not formal. Keep in mind that this does not mean
jeans and tennis shoes, but chances are, khaki pants (for men) and
a nice skirt or dress (for women) will do justice for this attire
preference.
Black tie and black tie optional generally mean very formal. Black
tie optional provides the option to dress in black tuxedos (for
men) and elegant dresses (for women), but alleviates the stress of
having the buy or rent a tux if you can't/don't want to. Black
tie, on it's own, means you must pull it together and put on your
best duds (for men, it's a black tuxedo and for women, it's a
long, elegant evening dress, usually floor length).
Cocktail attire means that you should dress as though you're
headed out for a night on the town. Tuxedos are not appropriate
(they are too dressy), so men should aim for hip, funky suits.
Women should steer clear from floral, pastel dresses and put on
chic, trendy cocktail dresses.
If the invitation does not provide an attire request, then it's
best to dress more formal than you would for a morning or
afternoon wedding. Evening weddings usually permit darker colors,
such as black, brown or deep red. Women can don more jewelry than
they would during a morning or afternoon wedding.
Similarly, men
look best in dark suits with ties for evening weddings. Both men
and women should avoid sandals, white or light colored fabrics and
they should dress as though they were going out for a nice evening
dinner or a show.
Deciding what to wear to an evening wedding should be a fun
experience. As more people are having “untraditional” weddings
(meaning, they are not on Saturday afternoon at a church), it's
giving wedding guests the opportunity to express themselves more
with different types of clothing and play with different colors,
such as black or browns, two colors that were not looked upon as
appropriate for weddings several years ago.
So, if you've been invited to an evening wedding, be creative!
Find something that fits within the bride and groom's requested
attire and express yourself!
