Wedding Cake Decorations- Indulge Your Creativity!

Traditional wedding cake decoration never goes out of style, but what if you want something a little more unique and exciting for your cake top? You don’t have to be boring. Dispense with the tried and true and set your sights on a wedding cake that will have everybody talking! For some creative and memorable wedding cake decoration ideas read on.

Are you sad that your pet(s) cannot be at your wedding? Whatever animal owns your heart, be it a cat, dog, rabbit, hamster, guinea pig, find a way to incorporate him or her into the festivities. Shop for plastic animal figurines at your local art or toy store and place them next to the two of you atop the cake. Now your pets really can be with you on your special day!

Did you two meet at a fair or amusement park? Here’s a fun idea- find a miniature Ferris wheel (or even a roller coaster!) and use that to adorn your wedding cake. Purchase a musical cake top as well and have your bride and groom waltz the night away at the fair!

Or maybe be an all out wedding rebel and forgo figurines and do something uniquely “you.” My cousin always said her fate was “written in the stars” so she found someone who made lovely stars as crafts and a star was born atop her cake!

Another friend of mine placed a small picture her daughter had painted of her mommy and her daddy “on a dream date” as she called it, on top of the cake and circled it with candy love hearts.

My friend Terri was always late for everything- eternally unpunctual. Her mother used to tease her that on her wedding day she’d probably show up after it was over. So as a cute joke Terri placed a small silver bell (that really rang) on top of her wedding cake and next to it stood a note on fancy stationery that read, “I made it and I’m yours always!” Some of the guests didn’t understand the significance so after it was explained to them they had a great laugh.

For imaginative wedding cake decoration, don’t forget how decorative candies can be (and delicious to boot!). Gumdrops, chicken bones, licorice, Smarties, even bubble gums, they all can add up to fun and exciting ways to have anything but a dull wedding cake!

My friend Mandy was never one to stick with tired old ideas. She used different colored M& M candies to form a heart shape on top of her wedding cake. Then she used only red M & M’s to write the bride and groom’s initials. As if that wasn’t enough, standing in the middle of this colorful display was a chocolate almond heart. Almond was the groom’s favorite. That topper made a big splash with him in particular!

If you could, would you live on the beach all summer long (or maybe even all year long)? Do you love to feel sand beneath your feet and the warm sun on your back? Bring a little beachy feel to your wedding cake.

No, I’m not suggesting you sprinkle sand on top of your wedding cake, but how about decorating with a few seashells and maybe a tiny beach umbrella and a fancy drink? Or perhaps a pair of sunglasses, a hat or visor. If you visit the “Barbie” toy section of any department store you will find many of these accessories. And Mattel is coming out with more and more new items all the time. The beach never looked so hot!

If something has a certain significance to you and your beloved consider using it as a cake topper. My friend Monica proudly placed a small-framed photo on top of her wedding cake. It was the first photo ever taken of the couple - smiling and hugging in front of an ice cream stand.

Another friend, Deidre, placed a porcelain dolphin on top of wedding cake. She collects dolphins and it was the first gift her husband Garrett had ever given her. A taste of romance is fitting anywhere in your wedding, even as the crowning glory of your wedding cake!

Indulge your creativity and jazz up your cake any way you please. Wedding cake decoration options are endless - explore them fully and then enjoy every last bite!
