Alter Wedding Decor
Selecting Just The Right Alter Decor
Are you looking for alter decor and flower ideas for your
wedding? Before you start planning, be sure to check with your
church for any rules that they may have in regards to the kind of
decorations that they allow. Your church may prohibit flowers that
obscure the alter or podium, for instance, or require that no
decorations be affixed with pins.
Once you know what you'll be allowed to use, you can find alter
decor and flower ideas, as well as ideas for pew and aisle
decorations from many different sources. Here are a few of my
favorites, gathered from bridal magazines, florists' brochures and
weddings I've attended, along with some tips for saving money and
creating your own alter and pew decorations.
Remember that YOU are the centerpiece of the alter on your wedding
day. You and your wedding party will be the most visible element
on the alter - and it's where the eyes of all your guests will be.
Choose wedding flowers that complement and accent the colors that
you've chosen for your wedding party. If you decide to be
traditional and have arrangements of white flowers, ribbons and
tulle can add a touch of color amid the greenery.
Alters are most often decorated with matching floral pieces at
either end, but there's no law that says you can't break that
convention. Alter swags are a popular alternative or addition. You
can order them in many sizes and varieties of flowers. If you
choose flowers that complement those in your wedding bouquet,
they'll make a harmonious picture.
Another alternative to alter flowers that stand at either end of
the alter table are floor arrangements or wreaths on floral stands
at either side of the alter itself. A very pretty variation of the
theme is an upright double ring wreath surrounding a hurricane
lamp.
If you choose to include a candle lighting ritual as part of your
wedding ceremony, decorate a side table with floral swags and a
wreath set with a pair of tapers, and a larger candle at the
center of the wreath.
It's traditional to decorate the pews lining the center aisle with
flowers or ribbons. Tulle, a sheer, fine netting material, is
available in dozens of colors, and can be used to create big bows,
or swags along the center aisle.
Large satin bows in the wedding colors, each centered with a
single flower are a popular alternative to full floral. If you're
on a budget, you can decorate every other pew, or even just the
first pews at the front of the church that are reserved for the
families of the happy couple.
If your church allows it, a wedding arch at the alter is more than
just a decoration. The symbolism of exchanging vows beneath a
bower of roses and living greenery, then stepping through the arch
to become a part of the community as a married couple creates a
beautiful memory.
Still uncertain about what kind of arrangements you'd like at the
church for your wedding? You'll find lots of wedding alter decor
and flower ideas on the web sites of florists and wedding
consultants. Just remember - no matter what flowers you choose,
they should add to the meaning of the day, not overshadow it.
